LP to Comelec: Declare failure of elections in Maguindanao
... Drilon admitted that managing elections in Mindanao was difficult. He recalled a statement of the late Haydee Yorac, when she was chairperson of the Comelec and in charge of the ARMM region, where she said, “They do not need an election in Mindanao, they need a military governor.”
In a slip of the tongue, former Senate President and President of the Liberal Party, the Dominant Opposition Party, quoted former Chair of the COMELEC and the Presidential Commission on Good Government, the late Haydee Yorac as saying that MINDANAO NEEDS A MILITARY GOVERNOR.
This shows the real mindset of Filipino government officials; ie., Muslim Mindanao is a COLONY of Christian Philippines and needs to be governed militarily. The US used to govern its colony the Philippines, including Moroland with military governors. Obviously, some Filipino leaders believe that they are the successors of the Americans in Mindanao / Moroland.
President Gloria Arroyo already took the first step by appointing a Military (or Police?) General as President of the Mindanao State University.
The Moro People should take this Freudian slip as a clear warning of the true intentions of the Filipino leadership. It must be noted that in 1935, the Manila government enacted Legislative Act 4197 known as the “Quirino-Recto Colonization Act”. According to this law, the “lasting solution” to the Moro Problem was the SETTLEMENT of Moroland by Christians from Luzon and Visayas.
(As a result of this Colonization Act and other colonization policies, Bicolanos and Ilocanos like Pimentel and Zubiri call themselves Mindanaoans and fight to represent Mindanao in the Senate of the Philippines. On the other hand, the indidgenous peoples of Mindanao — the Bangsa Moro — are not represented in the Senate.)
The Manuel Quezon government was obssesed with settling Mindanao / Moroland that in 1938, Quezon et al offered Mindanao to be the new home of Jewish refugees. If the Moros at that time did not oppose the idea and the US did not enter World War II, Israel would have been in Mindanao!
